Artist's Comments

Sorry folks, nothing big this time. It's just a comp idea that I came up with 15 min ago that I think I'm going to hopefully finish. Since some people have been asking how I do my stuff, this might give a little insight.

The truth is, nothing I do is outside of the norm. I do gather reference so it looks at least somewhat ... like something? I don't know about other artists (especially the big pros), but almost all of my teachers stressed us using reference boards until it was completely drilled in my head. T_T

I tend to force myself to work with a large brush in the beginning so I don't find myself burning my eyes on unnecessary details. More importantly I'm concerned with getting an overall shape and flow. It's easier to tell if it's working by throwing it out of focus (or in my case, taking off my glasses or contacts since I'm half blind). Just remember composition is about -choices- i.e. it is your battle plan. I'm certainly not a master of composition, and in fact far from a master of anything - I'm still a newb! If any of you know of Marshall Vandruff in the SoCal area, he's probably one of the best people to teach this subject (or any subject for that matter), and probably one of the most delightful people you will ever know in your entire life. Believe it or not, there's a myriad of possibilities than just dividing things into thirds. You can actually find out about his seminars at marshallart.com (gosh I sound like an advertisement). Just a heads up!

I'm actually pretty conservative when it comes to my values and intensities, so this time I'm trying to go with something that has a bit more of a punch in contrast. I also have to resist the urge to blend, although I kinda gave in a bit on the right side. XD;;;

Usually after this I'll keep the color on a separate layer and try to see how I can get some perspective to work with me. The only challenge in this is to make sure I don't get lazy. Sadly enough, I know 5 methods of depth measuring but after a while my brain fries *cough*... This is 1 pt though so we'll see how this goes. Just got to stay flexible since anything can change~.

Even if you did do that in 15 minutes, it's better than I'd attempt in an hour :XD:

I actually really like the colours. They give the scene a calm and summery feel :D I'd love to see this finished =P

Oh I know what you mean about teachers drilling refs into you. I rarely use those, and don't like them much. (Unless I need it badly.)

And I always start with details LOL;;; But I also take off my glasses and look at the composition/color balance. It's a blur.

Hope to see this refined soon~

Well then you are the best "newb" I have ever seen.
Thank you so much for the discriptions it really helps a lot. I am going to try that refrence thing with all of my work since I have noticed I like the work I use refrences on the best.
I cant wait to see this finished!

I really like the tones and such in this already!
Gah, I can't really tell you how happy seeing your works make me...
I can relate with being half-blind...but it at least comes i handy when you're trying to piece together color values. :]

There are a great many people in the country today, who through no fault of their own, are sane.
:iconkazuri:
oh so you use more than one layer? the only question is how you turn that into details? but enough talking, cant wait for the finishing piece.

Dood~
:icondailychecks:
I agree. I hear this all the time, but great artists never share their method of adding detail. But yes, a lot of great explanation thus far. Can't wait for it to be finished.
